LONDON (Jan. 16) – A Vancouver company has won the competition and will be offered a contract to give a fresh look to Market Place downtown.
HAPA Collaborative submitted the winning entry in a national competition to create a trendy new space of the laneway which connects Dundas St. to the north entrance of Covent Garden Market, just beside Fanshawe College’s future school of applied and performance arts.
The proposal displays a light sky ceiling, a meander bench and luminescent ottomans, along a riverbank garden.
“HAPA’s winning scheme offers Londoners opportunity to realize a leading edge design,” says Steve Ries, chairperson of the urban design jury which picked it from five finalists. “It responds to the need for a pedestrian focused, day and night, all season urban environment that is both delightful and elegant in its simplicity.”
“This will be an exciting new addition for London. It will be an example of how bold landscape architecture can create unique and stimulating public spaces for all to enjoy,” says Andrew Macpherson, the city’s manager of parks planning and design.
The winning team will now work on the construction documents to be tendered this April, in order for construction to begin in July. The unveiling of the new Market Place is anticipated to take place November 2012.
